FOBO is the New FOMO
Who hasn’t heard of FOMO?
The acronym, which stands for Fear of Missing Out, has been popular on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter for over a decade now.
But FOMO is so yesterday. Our current AI era has generated immense FOBO in millions of workers!
FOBO??
With reports of AI leading to job losses, millions are now gripped by Fear of Becoming Obsolete, or FOBO.
As you may have guessed by now, in this post we’ll be looking at Acronyms, Initialisms and Abbreviations.
Acronyms and Initialisms are both abbreviations (any shortened form of a word or phrase).
But all abbreviations are not alike.
Although Acronyms and Initialisms are both abbreviations, they’re different.
So what’s the difference?
Is NATO an acronym or initialism?
With an initialism, each letter is pronounced separately unlike with acronyms. We pronounce every letter in AI, BBC, IMF, FBI, DNA or CIA, and so they are all initialisms. AKA is an initialism. As are AIH (another day in hell), OIC (Oh, I See), BTW (by the way), SMH (shaking my head), OTP (one true pairing or one time password) and IWHNKM.
An acronym is a shortened form made from the initial letters of a phrase that is pronounced as a new word. For instance, in the acronym NATO we do not pronounce each letter but say NATO as a single word. Here are more examples of acronyms: NASA, SCUBA, LASER and RADAR.
